When is the Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge held?
26 and 27 September 2026 – the Saturday and the Sunday. The Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge takes place over two days, with rides and festival activities held throughout the weekend in Adelong, NSW.
Where does the event start and finish?
All rides start and finish at the Adelong Showgrounds, making it easy for riders and supporters to enjoy the event village and festival atmosphere.
How do I register for the Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge?
Registrations are completed online through Raceroster. Early registration is recommended as some ride categories may reach capacity.
Can I register on the day?
If places remain available, riders may be able to register during event weekend. You will need to register online and complete the online risk acceptance form prior to collecting your bib number. Check the website for current registration information.
What ride distances are available?
Riders can choose from multiple road distances including 20km, 45km, 72km, 117km, 160km, 205km on the Sunday and a dedicated gravel ride of 44km on the Saturday.
Where can I download the route maps?
Our Ride Options page - https://snowyvalleyscyclechallenge.com.au/routes/ provides links to the route maps. You can download the maps to your cycling navigation device. Route maps show the details of route and gradients. Checkpoints are also shown on the relevant routes.
Rider Experience FAQs
Which ride is best for beginners?
The 20km and 45km rides are ideal for newer cyclists, families and riders looking for a shorter challenge. Both these rides have gentle gradients.
Is there a ride for experienced cyclists?
Yes. The 117km, 160km and 205km routes offer significant climbing and are designed for experienced endurance cyclists. The 205km route has over 3,000 metres of climbing.
Is the event suitable for gravel bikes?
Yes. The dedicated gravel route, 44km and over 1,000 metres of climbing on the Saturday, has been designed specifically for gravel and mountain bikes and includes challenging unsealed sections across spectacular private cattle country and forestry tracks.
Can I ride an e-bike?
Yes. Electric power-assisted bicycles that are legal to ride on NSW roads are permitted. All bikes, electric or analogue must comply with NSW regulations.
Do I need a special cycling licence to participate?
No. Recreational riders are welcome, provided they meet the event requirements and safety conditions.
What level of fitness do I need?
Fitness requirements vary depending on the ride distance. Riders should choose a route that matches their cycling experience and training level.
Safety & Logistics FAQs
Are the roads closed during the event?
The event operates under approved road event permits. Roads are open however advance speed warnings are in place for selected areas. Traffic is usually light. Leading and trailing vehicles with event signage are deployed for each of the routes. Motorcycle marshals patrol the routes.
Riders must follow all directions from event officials and road marshals.
Special note: bicycles must comply with NSW road regulations.
Do I need to wear a helmet?
Yes. An Australian Standards-approved cycling helmet must be worn at all times while riding.
What support is available on course?
Support vehicles and motorcycles patrol the course, but riders should be self-sufficient and carry basic repair equipment, basic first aid gear, water and nutrition.
Will there be food and water stations?
Yes. Checkpoint stations are provided at the following locations:
- Tumblong, light food (fruit), water, toilets
- Batlow at the Literary Institute, Batlow apple pies available, along with fruit, water, and toilets
- Bago, intersection of Lower Bago Road and Broadleaf Park Road, food, water, first aid kit, and toilets
- Tumbarumba, The Parade, food, water, and toilets
Is mobile phone coverage available on the course?
Coverage is limited in some areas, particularly on longer routes. Riders should plan accordingly.
What happens if I cannot finish my ride?
Event support crews will assist riders who need help completing the course. Each route will have a “sad wagon” to look after stragglers.
Family & Visitor FAQs
Is the Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge only for cyclists?
No. The event weekend includes markets, food, entertainment and community activities around the Adelong Showgrounds and the township of Tumut that can be enjoyed by family members and visitors.
What is there to do in the Snowy Valleys during the event?
Visitors can explore local food and drink experiences, rail trails, bushwalking, wineries, breweries, markets and the region's natural attractions.
Can I bring my family?
Absolutely. The event is designed as a weekend getaway experience for riders, families and supporters.
Are there activities for children?
Yes. The event village (various stalls and activities) and shorter ride options make the weekend family-friendly. Our shortest ride is 20km and is ideal for riders aged 12 and up, accompanied by an adult. Child and adult must both register for the event. Event cost is kept low for this reason.

Where should I stay for the event?
Accommodation is available throughout Adelong, Tumut, Batlow and Tumbarumba. Early booking is recommended.
How far is Adelong from Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne?
Adelong is an easy regional road trip destination and makes an ideal cycling weekend escape. Travel times are approximately 2.5 hours from Canberra, 4.5 hours from Sydney, and 5.5 hours from Melbourne.
Can I make a holiday out of the event?
Yes. Many riders stay for several days to explore the Snowy Valleys and enjoy the wider festival program.
