44km Gravel Ride

Start 12:30pm Saturday 26th, 3.5 hour target.

A reasonable level of fitness and experience on loose gravel surfaces are required for this ride.

Gravel or Mountain Bike recommended - some of the gravel sections have course, loose gravel surfaces combined with gradients.

Roads can be muddy, rocky, slippery.  There is a 2-metre-wide creek crossing possibly requiring you to carry your bike.  Water depth approximately 30cm.

Amazing scenery across private cattle country, through native forests and state forests.  Two long and challenging descents - one on gravel / dirt / mud, the other on the tarmac return towards Adelong.

  • Out on Wondalga Road, then onto the gravel loop, then return via Wondalga Road to Adelong
  • Just over 1,000 metres of climbing
  • Most challenging climb is 3km at 7.2%, then a scenic and challenging descent of 7.5km
  • 56% unpaved
  • 100% joyous scenery

Sturdy types may ask the question, "gravel on Saturday AND road ride on Sunday?"  Obviously you'd "have to" bring two bikes....

20 km Adult & Kids, out and back, Adelong to Grahamstown

Start Time 9.30am

Beginners course, as flat as we can make it in Adelong. It’s not flat, but the hills are not killers either. Biggest hill is 6% back into Adelong

For the rider who only wants a short ride with a challenge.

Minimum rider age is 12.  Riders under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  Both child and adult must be registered.

Grades are up to 6%

45 km Adelong to Tumblong and back to Adelong

Start 9.00am

Beginner/ intermediate route out and back course, undulating terrain following the Adelong Creek to Tumblong. Short hills, with biggest hill 6% gradient.

3-hour time target.

72km Adelong, Wondalga, Batlow, Bago, Link Rd (Greenhills Access Rd & Broadleaf Park Rd), Wondalga, Adelong

Start 8.00am 5-hour time target.

A reasonable level of fitness is required as this course has 1378 m of climbing, with a short 12% section.

It also has a wonderful descent back to Wondalga.  A medium level challenge.  

  • 1380 meters of climbing
  • Grades are up to 12% most 6% to 8%
  • Water and nutrition [apple pie] available at Batlow and Bago/ Link Rd checkpoints.

117Km – a combination of 45km +72km course

Adelong to Tumblong and return to Adelong then onto Wondalga, Batlow, Bago, Link Rd (Greenhills Access Rd & Broadleaf Park Rd), Wondalga, and back to Adelong

Maximum 8-hour time ride time.

A higher level of fitness is required.

It also has a wonderful descent back to Wondalga.  A higher level challenge.

  • 1700 meters of climbing
  • Grades are up to 12% mostly 6% to 8%
  • Water and nutrition available at Tumblong, Batlow, Bago, Adelong

Maximum time 8 hours

Course Map

160 Km Adelong, Rosewood/ Tumbarumba, Adelong.

Start time 7.00am

160km riders will go off first Maximum 9.5-hour target time [4.30pm] 

This is a challenging course with 2700 meters of climbing. The 160 km event uses the same basic course as the popular 72km event with an added loop into Rosewood then onto NSW “First Rail Trail” to Tumbarumba. The Rail trail is tarred and is a nice ride with gentle gradient’s peaking at 3.5%. The 160km is a good challenge for the strong, fit riders.

Minimum rider age is 16 years.

205Km – a combination of 45km + 160Km courses

Start 7.00am

This is a challenge suitable for experienced riders.  

Minimum age is 16 for this one.

Total climbing over 3,000 metres.

The first 45km section is undulating terrain following the Adelong Creek to Tumblong and return to Adelong. Short hills, maximum 6%. This will suit the sprinters and may lead riders into a false sense of security for the hills ahead. The real climbing begins now as riders follow the smooth-surfaced ascent to Batlow, Rosewood, then onto the rail trail to Tumbarumba, then back onto fast roads and spectacular scenery to Batlow and the technical descent down Greenhills Access Road for the return to Adelong.

There are two loops on this ride to provide variety of roads, smooth ascents, exciting technical descents, and fabulous views.

IMPORTANT

Rider Number pickup: Saturday 26 September 2026, 11am to 5pm, at Start Area, Adelong Showground.

Riders can also pickup your numbers on Sunday morning from 6.00am.

NOTE: Please allow an extra 30 minutes prior to your start time on for number pickup.

All riders must attend a rider briefing 10 minutes prior to the start of their ride. 

Ride departures will be staggered within each distance so as to comply with NSW Event Road permit approval. [Start splits within distance will be advised on the day.]

Here are the start times:

SATURDAY RIDE:

Gravel 44km - 12:30pm

Riders will start arriving back at Adelong Showgrounds around 3:30pm Saturday

SUNDAY RIDES:

205km - 7:00am

160km – 7:15am

117km - 7.30am

72km – 8.00am

45km – 9.00am

20km – 9:30am

Riders will start arriving back at Adelong Showgrounds around 10.15 am Sunday.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

By entering Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge, you acknowledge and understand:

  • As a rider, it is your responsibility to be self-sufficient while participating in this event. You should be capable of performing a basic repair and ensure you have sufficient water and nutrition to complete your chosen distance.
  • Mobile phone coverage is very limited on the course.
  • There will be roaming support motorcycles and vehicles along the course to assist participants if required.
  • Any human-powered cycle that is legal to be ridden on NSW roads can be ridden in the event. This includes two-wheelers, recumbents, tandems, three-wheeled racing wheelchairs (for riders with disabilities) and electric power-assisted pedal-cycles.
  • Tandems with a pilot and stoker may enter. Both pilot and stoker must both register and fill in entry.   Please contact us with your separate entry details as we will issue only one entry number, to be fixed in the normal way.
  • Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge is open to riders 12 years and over. Riders under the age of 18 years are required to be accompanied by a responsible adult. [160km minimum age 16yr old.]
  • All riders must comply with NSW road rules including special condition of Police, "Riders must ride in single file on single lane roads" "keep to the extreme left-hand side of the carriage way at all times" and your helmet must have an Australian Standard sticker.

As event organizer's Rotary Club of Tumut, provides entrants with the following event support:

  • Water and nutrition at checkpoints Lunch in Tumbarumba for those entering the longer rides.
  • Support vehicles patrolling the courses to assist with repairs (no private support vehicles are permitted)
  • Motorcycle marshals patrolling the course
  • Emergency phone number for pickup or assistance
  • Signage to provide direction on courses
  • Toilets located at checkpoints
  • Toilets, showers and change facilities available at the start/finish at Adelong
